A Luxmeter is an instrument to measure the illuminance (the amount of light useful for human sight, hitting a surface of unit area) according to the SI-system with a standardised (by the CIE) spectral response (colour sensitivity), that by convention models the sensitivity of the daylight (photopic) mode of the human eye and the human perception to quantify the intensity impression light induces in humans.

The Lightmeter measures all light that it is capable to detect and does not use a filter to implement the CIE-spectral response curve to include all relevant light, in particular the blue and red parts of the spectrum that are of importance for the human metabolism and the colours that are potentially important for other species.
